Embarrassing Bodies Kids: Episode 1

Nit problems

The first kid in the waiting room is eight year old Tiffany whose hair has been harbouring some little monsters for the last 4 years. 50% of 11 to 14 year olds get nits each year, they are particularly prevalent in school children as they are caught through hair to hair contact. Tiffany’s nits had damaged her self-confidence, and although her mum had tried all treatments available, the stubborn nits just won’t budge. Dr Christian sent Tiffany to see specialist nit removers, who have an array of tools to drive those pesky nits out. They begin by hoovering the hair to get rid of all the living lice, then the hair is sprayed with a special conditioner and combed using a very fine toothed comb to get rid of the eggs, the more stubborn eggs are finally picked out with tweezers. Tiffany had 4 sessions of nit removal, totally 5 hours! But her hair is now nit free.

We’ve prepared a special guide to 3 of the treatment options for nits >

My daughter has had nits on and off for over a year!!! She gets really down about it.......I find rather than spends £££'s on expensive treatment, which I have done, spray in conditioner with the nitty gritty comb works wonders (Comb around £10) ....... Then dry hair and those with long hair Straighten the hair and leave in an oliy (ish) hair treatment/spray (nits or eggs as they are also called) have difficulty attaching to the hair then !!!! Honest now all these treatments for head louse/nits on the market work yes!!!!....but you will have to keep buying!!! Where as the leave in conditioners are not as expensive with the combination of the nitty gritty comb, which you will have already bought, is just as effective!!! Plus make your school aware and keep on at them to take notice!!! Its all about educationing ..... where did the nit nurse go a???? Hopefully this will have helped Charlie :) x

I am now 14 year old and am completely free of lice and nits, but when i was in primary school it was a completely different story. from i was about 7 till 10 i just couldnt get the nits away, and i always had sore heads. my mum put this lice spray on to kill the lice and i used tea tree shampoo and conditioner to keep the nits away, although my hair smelt lovely, nits thought otherwise. then my mum put i fine tooth nits and lice comb through my hair every morning and every night. when i went swimming i had to wear i swimming cap, because although nits cant jump, they can swim.

Okay just to let you know, nits can't swim, jump or fly. But i'd wear a swimming cap anyway lol

hi im a 14 yr old girl and i found that when i was in primary all my problems started with headlice because someone always had them and passed them on. my advice would to invest in hedrin because it works wonders on getting the adults out of your childs hair. and i would also go and get the nitty gritty comb for ten pounds. it will help loads. and it will get easier as soon as they start high school because there aren`t as many people with head lice. hope it helps.

- hey. my friend had nits for years, and kept giving me them. i found hedrin worked after a couple of times. and they never came back again. it's hard to get rid of the eggs, but i managed somehow; not exactly sure how, but i spent ages combing my hair with a nit comb. good luck. :3

Don't stress!!! My daughter came home everyday with big adult lice in her hair! They loved her. I used to sit with conditioner a bowl of water and a nit comb for hours everyday for about four years on and off! You may get rid of them but their classmates probably don't, so they come back. Comb their hair with tea tree oil plait it and buy them bandanas! this was the only way I could stop it.

simple method I've found with my own children is... 1. Nits DON'T jump! Keep your child's hair controlled, cut short or tied back into a French plait or braid (also an opportunity to check for sign) to minimise contact. 2. Check the hair and scalp at least twice a week. 3. As soon as you see ANY crawlies or eggs wash your child's hair in a mild shampoo (Johnsons or similar) then load the hair with a lot of cheap conditioner, shop-branded, and comb from root to tip with a nit comb. This should get rid of any adult nits, but the eggs are still there. 4. Repeat washing and conditioning every night for at least a week, or 10 days to make sure, this should take out all the nits that have hatched before they have a chance to mature.
