Embarrassing Bodies Kids: Episode 2

Alopecia

This week a whole new queue of kids is forming at the clinics doors. 13 year old Lauren is the first to visit Dr Pixie. Lauren has been suffering from alopecia since the age of two, and it’s steadily getting worse – since starting secondary school Lauren has lost 70% of her hair and is forced to wear a wig. Alopecia is an auto-immune disease, the body doesn’t think the hair belongs to it, so it rejects it. Lauren has Alopecia Areata, which affects children and young adults. Why is unknown, but possible causes are viruses, inoculations, shock or extreme stress. As the longer the problem has persisted, the harder it is to find a cure, Dr Pixie suggests that Lauren has a permanent wig fitted. Lauren visits Lucas Sojka, a hair loss specialist. His team attaches a mesh, called a weft, to Lauren’s existing hair, and secures it to the bald patches with surgical tape. Panels of real hair are then sewn on to the weft to form a seamless head of hair. The transformation is drastic, Lauren’s mum describes her as a different person.

The EB team would like to thank:

Lucas Sojka and Hair Solved, Manchester

hi i seen laurens story and my grandaughter has alopecia areata she is 12 years old and she wears a wig.sometime ago my daughter was at school and one of the pupils tugged at her hair and the wig came off.since then her world has been turned upside down and her confidence is gone completelyshe gets taunted at school by bullies and other class mates and is finding it hard to cope and is always feeling down.she has lost about 70% of her hair and theres no sign of it stopping as its falling out daily.I have just came across this web page and id like to know if this treatment or any other treatment may be available on the NHS at all or would her family have to pay for it.we are at our witts end any help or information on this would be very much apreciated.

i got to this place on the video and i love the weft best thing i ever had done, however it is expencive and it can not be funded for of the nhs, my docotor basically told me it is not life threating so my family have to scrape every bit of money they have together for me to go here xx

That's very sad other children shouldn't treat her like that :( I don't know how to cure the problem but if children carry on taunting her then speak to a teacher or headmaster at school about it and maybe that will help goodluck!

I am thirteen years old and still have no boobs is this normal and when will they grow

Please go as soon as possible to a dermatologist NOT a GP they do not know best advice It could be nothing but it has some worrying signs My son was 15 when he had a black mole on his chest the GP told me it was nothing said I was pathetic it was clearly not itching not bleeding and was flat Nd did not Boyer my son. I insisted on seeing a consultant and threatened to report him to the BMA if he didn't refer me he did in the end. I saw a consultant privately the following day he said he thought it was nothing but would take it off and do a biopsy 7 days later he told me it was a malignant melanoma in it's early form. My son survived but I told the GP he needed to retire as he could have killed my son Please go a.s.a.p TH
