Embarrassing Bodies Kids: Episode 4

Constipation

Five year old Kelsey, like 1 in 12 children under ten, is suffering from a poo problem. Kelsey holds in her poo, as she finds it painful to go to the toilet, it can be as long as 7-10 days between poos. Dr Christian wants to determine whether Kelsey is suffering from constipation or toilet phobia, and has a feel of her stomach to check that her organs and bowels are ok and that there isn’t a build up of hard poo. He confirms that it is a psychological problem, rather than physical, and refers Kelsey to child constipation specialist Dr Anthony Cohn. Dr Antony tries to change Kelsey’s perception of poo through a friendly cartoon character Mr Poo and by prescribing a high fibre diet and laxatives. After trying out the treatment, mum Claire reports positive results to Dr Christian, Kelsey is going to the toilet regularly now, thanks to mums persistent use of the laxative.

The EB team would like to thank:
Dr Anthony Cohn, Consultant Paediatrician

I am having such trouble with my 8 year old daughter at the moment. Like many other children on here she has had problems going for a poo for years now. She has just had aweek off school because she has a blockage in her bowl and is on 4 sachets of Movical a day to help to clear it. Some days she is on the toilet for 1 hour at a time. I feel so sad for her because she has tummy aches and gets really embarrassed. I have a good gp at the moment that we are going back to see on Monday. I need this sorted so she can enjoy her life and not worry abOut the toilet all the time.

my 8yr old son has bowel problems its been going on for around 5yrs he is on laxative for it as won't use the toilet i have to throw away pants sometimes its lose and messy sometimes solid i bribe him to use the toilet have tried everything i don't know what else to do any advice would be great.

my son is 3 an a half years old, hes been suffering from constipation since a baby. I've tried everything, and movicol was the only thing that worked. I had him on them for a short while and it worked, but my son just doesn't know when he has to poo. He does it on his pants all the time. I think that long term use of the movicol has made his bowel very lazy. So i stopped it and now i'm tryin reflexology and that works aswell but still doing it on his pants sometimes 4 or 4 times in 1 day and then nothing for 10 days. I'm at my wits end. The doctor sait to starthim back on the movicol so i did and things are alot worse again. I don't know if its a phobia or just that he has no push in him to poo. HELP

Although I am a grown up I can really sympathise with these stories as for the past fifteen plus years I've had bowel issues. As a child I was really sensitive and would either be completely constipated or suffering with diarrhoea. My parents took me to doctor after doctor who used to say & do nothing other that prescribe movicol, senna and lactose to help me go and loperamide to stop me going! At my worst I was practically taking both types of medication simultaneously!!! Then aged 19 I happened to be talking to a friend of a friend who was a nurse in am allergy clinic and was telling her my problems. She gave me a list of common triggers and suggested I try cutting them out my diet to see if it had an impact. Wheat/gluten had no effect, however dairy did, interestingly not only did by bowel habit improve but so did my eczema! I changed gp and on explaining my 15 years of hell and then improvement with a dairy limited diet my new gp was very supportive. It turns out I was lactose intolerant, just because not all the avenues were explored initially. I really would urge patents to push medical professionals to seek the root of the problem, other that just treating the symptoms as aged 4 had time been taken to do this I could have avoided years of taking medications I didn't need!

my son has been having problems with consipation since he was 7 months now he is 2 and a half. He suffered terribly and we tried everything that the books had told us. Prunes, pears, apple juice ect... then i had a second baby and we took him to get his check up and mentioned about my other son having trouble with getting his poo out. Luckly she was also a natropath and told us that there is light at the end of the tunnel! First things first get them off cows milk and put them on soy or rice milk. She then told us that we try warm lemon cordial before bed then brush teeth of course and then first thing in the morning. They do this is hospitals when a child goes in for having extreamly bad constipation and usually helps get things moving . this helps and is a natural sugar lubricant to help move the waste through the bowels. much like lactalose. then we were told if that has no effect then to try kids probioctics and fish oil which teamed with soy milk WORKS A TREAT. we have had no problems at all with the constipation and now my little boy doesn't scream anymore and no more anal fissures:) it was such a relife to see him happy on the toilet and not terrified of pain when he passed his poo!!! give it a try and let you bubbas have the relife too:)
