Embarrassing Bodies Kids: Episode 4

Constipation

Five year old Kelsey, like 1 in 12 children under ten, is suffering from a poo problem. Kelsey holds in her poo, as she finds it painful to go to the toilet, it can be as long as 7-10 days between poos. Dr Christian wants to determine whether Kelsey is suffering from constipation or toilet phobia, and has a feel of her stomach to check that her organs and bowels are ok and that there isn’t a build up of hard poo. He confirms that it is a psychological problem, rather than physical, and refers Kelsey to child constipation specialist Dr Anthony Cohn. Dr Antony tries to change Kelsey’s perception of poo through a friendly cartoon character Mr Poo and by prescribing a high fibre diet and laxatives. After trying out the treatment, mum Claire reports positive results to Dr Christian, Kelsey is going to the toilet regularly now, thanks to mums persistent use of the laxative.

The EB team would like to thank:
Dr Anthony Cohn, Consultant Paediatrician

My son is 6 now was toilet trained at a very early age but the past three and half years, soils his pants up to 20 times a day! Tried movicol and senna high fibre foods and plenty of water, tried playing games and reward charts tried ignoring it as health visitors warned NOTHING works I am going through packs of undies and soap powder as if its going outof fashion. He eats like a kid has never been fed always hungry but with so much going in and little coming out iI don't want him to end up seriously I'll , anyone else had this as I really need help and advice he knows how to go the toilet even went back to basic potty training I'm will out of ideas HELP

My son is 3 months away from 9 years old and he has had a prolem with constipation and soiling since he was 3 years old. We have also been given the advice of Movicol and high fibre diet. Sometimes the Movicol works for short periods but if I up the dose he has stomach cramps and nausea and very loose stools. He has a loss of appetite and I struggle to get him to eat at all. I just dont know how to get more fibre into him if he wont eat. I also think he is very underweight because of this. He soils several times a day and is very embarrased. I;m at my wits end and could cry for him. I worry about him constantly. I just dont know what to do anymore. The doctor just gives ther same advice of high fibre foods, water and movicol. I really need help

My son started this at 3 too although he eats he's still looking verythin and underweight you have had to deal with this a lot longer than me has the gp never gave you proper answers? I don't find the movicol or senna do me think except make more mess for me to clean

My 3 year old daughter has been on laxatives for a year now and is still not better. Even with laxatives she doesn't poo for nearly a week. I've tried varied diets and giving her laxatives in the morning and at night but no change. The doctors won't do anything and said they do think there's a problem as a lot of young children get constipated. As her mother I feel a year on laxatives is silly and something needs to be done now but the doctors keep fobbing me off! What should I do? Thanks, Alison patterson

I am 19 and I had my first baby over a year ago now. I had problems with stomach and vagina whilst pregnant. then bad afteI had her. I had 4 stomach infections. thrush twice. I have had a lot of problems going for a poo ever since the pregnancy. I have never had a problem before that I remember. I literally feel like my poo is really really big. too big to come out. and feels like glass. I barley go often since birth. every 4 days upwards I would say. but now I hold it in because of the pain I literally shake and cry when I try to go. I have tried creams to grease it up but it doesn't work. I need to go now but it hurts to bad. what can I do right now?

My son was the same he used to go every day then when the same problem started I took him to doctors who prescribed laxative which didn't seem to make much difference, then I noticed he would go days before going to the toilet (mainly because he was too busy playing on computer games) and the only thing that solved it was to make him sit on the toilet every other day when he came in from school until he had had a poo! Now it's only if I forget to make him go to the toilet for a poo that he will now and again have slightly marked pants! Hope this helps!
