Embarrassing Bodies Kids: Episode 4

Obesity

Sarah is concerned about her son Josh’s expanding waistline. 11 year old Josh has put on a lot of weight in the past year, and admits he can’t control his eating and is always hungry. 1/3 of 11 – 15 year olds in the Uk are overweight or obese, this has serious health implications, there is a greater risk of developing coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes as well as being 20% more likely of having cancer in later life. Josh is invited to attend a twelve week weight management scheme, that promotes healthy lifestyle change rather than rapid weight loss. After the twelve weeks Josh has got rid of the junk food, is exercising more and has lost 11cm off his stomach and 4kg in weight.

My 8 year old granddaughter has always enjoyed eating and in the last year has her waistline is really noticeably expanding, despite she is very active with dancing and the local theatre group. My daughter, her mum, does her best to ensure she is eating correctly but despite that, it seems to make no difference. Should we be worried??????
