    Constipation

Constipation means they find gong to the toilet difficult or painful, and when they do go, they only manage to pass a few small, hard stools. Read more →

my 4 year old never makes it to the toilet to poo unless she happens to also need a wee. She says she can't get there quickly enough and so she crosses her legs and tries to withold which obvioulsy makes it worse in long run. I've identified through trial and error that she does much heallthier stools when not eating wheat but its taken so long to identify this that she has been on a range of laxitives over 2 years and most of them just made her go more frequently and as she passes 2-3 substantial stools a day I really don't see that she can be constipated. All the fuss and GPs, cranial osteopaths & kineseaologists & healh visitors has left her really anxious that she won't sort this out for school. She is very advanced in her learning and so most of her friends are already at school and they comment on it. I'm worried that when she starts school this year it could become a massive issue for her. My GP won't give me a referal for a dietician or an incontinence nurse as she is under 5 and so it is just put down to toilet training. All comments/ advice greatfully recieved.

my daughter is nearly 4 and has been referred to an incontinence clinic, so maybe you should go back to your gp and ask. she was referred by the community paedatrician.

My daughter is 2 nearly 3 in March she has been struggling with her bowels since 3months of age she will raise her knees up to her chest and scream in pain, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, bad mood, irratible, loss of appetite, so went to doctors got laxatives movicol which she ended up in A&E allergic reaction, seen paediatricians got more laxatives tried lactolouse which didn't do anything, been seen by gut specialist and got put back on movicol she took another allergic reaction so went onto lactolouse again 10mls twice a day which cleared her for 2 days then stopped working no matter how much we gave her it even got up to 10 mls 3 times a day still nothing we have tried in over 2 years movicol, lactolouse, ducolax, senna and 2 other ones can't remember there names nothing helps just makes her worse tried diary free diet, lacto free diet, gluten free diet never helped tried syrup of figs, prunes, prune juice, pure juices, more fruit, more water, more veg, flax seed, probiotics still nothing helps now the specialist says give her lactolouse 10mls 3 times a day and ducolax 10 mls 3 times a day but I thought this is a it much and then got told by another professional do t give her that much so I thought it might be colic as she suffered with it very badly as a baby so gave her colief drops and within 24hours her stools went from hard to soft, more happier, better appetite , sleeps, not much gas cramps but she still has bloating and some pain when pushing she's passing stools the size of grapes about 2 to 3 times a day her bottom is red raw and very painful no matter how much cream we put on her we even gave lacto free diet along with drops and are still doing that now but it seems like the pain is getting abit more bad like it used to be can someone please help me I do t know what else to do she also has autism

Get your child to drink more water before food in the morning when he wakes up and try investing on natural detoxifying fruits like papaya, watermellon and include more fiber food . Consult your doctor if symptoms persist .

We found a diaper cream in Mexico called bebe..works better than anything else for a sore bottom.

I have friends who have a gluten intolerance. One of the symptoms is white stools. I would stress you take her to then doctors and make sure they test her for it. They can do it via blood test.

my son has had an itchy bottom on and off since he was 3 its been driving him crazy he is now 7. his stools have been tested for worms - all clear - doc have given him muscle relaxants, creams etc for it but to no avail. but no one has examine him for a fisure - im desperate for help. can you help my son. please help. its bothering him day and night and effecting him at school but he is too embarassed to say anything not sure what to do now.

Hiya. I totally sympathize with you. My son Kaelan, was seen by our GP numerous times and then referred but we were given no answers in terms of diagnoses. All I was being told was that it was probably worms. Although after worming him twice, with no effect, we knew it had to be something else. It wasn't until we met Anouk that we finally got some answers. She knew what the problem was straight away...an anal fisure. My advise to you is to keep on at your GP and insist you be referred to investigate the possibility of a fisure. After our meeting with Anouk, Kaelan has been prescribed Xyloproct (a cream) to heal the tear and Movicol(a powder for oral solution) to keep his stools soft to avoid a reoccurence of anymore tearing. We were quite shocked to hear Kaelan had been suffering with constipation. As a family we enjoy a high fibre diet, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. According to Miss Van der Avoirt some children's digestive systems are slower than others. It's just one of those things. Kaelan is getting on really well now. His had one little tear since but no way as bad as it was before. He just has to keep up the treatment and we have to make sure he drinks plenty of water, as this can also be a cause of constipation. I hope this has been of some help to you. Good luck with getting your son treated. Regards, Esther x

Hi My son is now 7 hes was diagnosed at just under 18 months - the "bloated" stomach is a sign that it common in younger children with Cd. that is really worrying, to me i've got rashes all over my face can't get them off me. I don't like sickness, nobody does, sometimes it can be hard to cope with it, the only ways to keep off fatness is either working the body or surgery, i am replying because i just want to say this to all of you, LIFE WITH SICKNESS CAN BE HARD!

I don't know whether this will help, but I wanted to say don't give up-keep nagging the doctors, health visitors etc until you get help. My daughter was the same as a baby when I weaned her from breastmilk onto formula milk-she would only go every 4 days and was in agony on the 4th day. She is now 6years old and has been through witholding and then encopresis and now still soils virtually daily-it's been a nightmare. I'd suggest if your baby is on formula milk, try changing it-my son was atopic (prone to allergies and excema/asthma) and I was advised to change his milk to a 'more gentle' one and it helped and I wish someone had suggested changing my daughter's milk too. I know people would nowadays frown on giving children fruit juice or sugared water (as my daughters 2 Nans advised me to do and I wish I had listened to them) but honestly I would personally do ANYTHING to avoid having a child with encopresis.(I was actually told by the health visitors not to even give her extra water, which now I can't believe I listened to- I understand now they would advise it to be ok to do so). My daugher was also given lactolose and tried this for a bit, but we only saw any progress once we got onto Movicol , so I would push for that as soon as your baby is old enough, if he's not better by then. You could look at the website of E.R.I.C which is a charity which deals with incontinence in children (of whatever sort) -they also have a phone no you can ring and they are really helpful and encouraging and also someone to speak to when it gets you down.

If you have gone through puberty then it won't grow a lot more but will still grow till your 21 and you should speak to your doctor obout tight foreskin and he will give you some cream and tell you how to stretch the foreskin if you can still not pull your foreskin back see your doctor and you will have to have it circumsticed

Hi Jason. Don't worry at all. Your penis is likely to continue growing until you are at least 19 so don't let this stop you getting into relationships. Remember you can leave your penis in your pants! Your foreskin will need a little help to start moving. Take a warm bath and try to ease it back then forward again. It may hurt a little but you have to be brave. Do this as often as possible and you should see a difference in a few months. Be patient and take care. Hope this helps.

my son was/is like that i took him to the doctors and he had an anal fissure (i think thats the right spelling) he got some cream and some drinks to soften his stools and it has helped loads no more itching or scratching or crying or going t he loo a million times a day cos thats what my son did aswel. i would take him they can sort it out its what there there for i didnt want to take my son but it got so bad he had to go and as for the penis my son still does that i think its just a boy thing lol but i hope he grows out of it soon lol take care hope you get it sorted

my 3yr old son is often complaning of a itchy bottom and has been given worm treatment on more then five occasions even though i have never seen worms in his stools or in his back passage. After watching this weeks programme it made me wonder if my son could have the same issue as the little boy in te programme as he always omplains that his bottom itches and he gets very upset and cries. Do you think that if i have never seen worms that there could be some other cause for his irritation?

A little back ground: I'm now 19 years old but I had tape worm in the second grade. I remember it fondly as I could see the worms pass through my stools and my ass would always itch at night. This went on for I would say about a year maybe more. I never told my parents regretfully and never got it checked out. I just read today that they can live in you for 25 years and I'm curious if I could still have it. I dont have any symptoms with my ass itching or seeing anything in my stools but I do cramp in my stomach every so often.

Her main symptoms were sickness nearly everyday, massive weight loss and a really bloated stomach. (the usual symptoms are toilet problems) She was diagnosed after being refered to the hospital by the GP which took a very long time. If I look back now I wish we had been a bit more pushy with the GP. We were dismissed a lot too. She got really poorly before anyone listened!

definatly get this looked at my daughter has been suffering for years and is only resently being diagnosed. Give the gp your suspicions but be firm. they are too quick to dismiss things by prescribing laxatives. we are under a professor at the hospital and they should do a series of tests for your son...good luck..

My daughter has been suffering from chronic constipation since I had to stop breast feeding when she was 2 weeks old. She is now 20 months old and has been taking Lactulose & sometimes liquid glycerin suppositories (Babylax) since 3 months old. With 5ml of Lactulose per day she may do a poo with straining and some liquid poo followed by a stool every 3 days. With 10ml, 1 every day or so. She has a text book diet as per advice, with extra fruit, veg, wholemeal & water. She enjoys eating. I'm worried that having constipation over such a long period of time, including faecal impaction, may mean she has lost sensation in & around the anus. She has certainly developed psychological issues around doing a poo and doesn't even want to try, making things worse. It's so hard to see her walking around with bent knees all day or even avoiding movement and lying down. When she gets the urge, she goes flushed and sweats, her nappies are marked, but there are no stools. Her tummy is always bloated and hard. Should I put the GP under pressure to refer us to a Pediatric Gastroenterologist and test for underlying conditions such as allergenic foods, Hirschrung's disease, anorectal malformation or spinal cord abnormalities?

Hello Chantelle, I hve a baby girl who is almost 5 months old and has had problems passing stools ever since she was 2 weeks old everyone said it would pass and at 6 weeks old she was given lactulose which still didnt help but after going 15 days without passing anything she was then put on senna, this got her going but then stopped again so she is now on 5ml senna and 5ml lactulose everyday, my health visitor was the one to get me referred to hospital but my local one said that i need to be seen quicker and to go to the bigger hospital so i am now waiting on the hospital getting back to me. I am breast feeding Holly and was told this may be a factor in why she is not passing stools? but i am starting to wean her now as she is ready and hungry and hope this does not cause more problems!! i just dont want to rely on laxitives to get her to go and i am sure that you dont and like you would love some advice as i cannot get any extra fluids in to her as she wont take a bottle due to being breastfed. A lot of people have told me it is commom but unsure why? lets hope we get answers from the hospital.

my daughter is 9 and has suffered with constipation for many years,we have been to the doctors many times,it is hard for her to go everyday, she does small hard poos and she also bleeds regular,we have tried laxatives but they have not helped, she also eats a balanced diet, the bleeding is worrying but the doctor says its just because she is forcing to hard, she can be on the toilet for up to an hour and she gets very upset.

My 2yr old was diagnosed with mild active colitis, and is on sulphasalizine and a dairy free diet. However, she is still passing blood through her stools and complains of stomach pains. After hearing about Coeliac, I am wondering if this is what she has.

i had trouble going to the loo, and when i eventually did go it was like i was passing glass it was agony!!! also couple of times blood on the stool and also on the toilet paper, i went straight to my gp and had an examination and she said i had an ANAL FISSURE- prescribed me cream and told me to eats loads of fibre...started eating mega amounts of fibre and stools was really soft an fissure healed, then calmed down on the fibre and i got my fissure back so back to the gp i went and she said i have got the fissure back, i was devasted coz its hard work trying to heal a fissure, it seems worse this time round...my gp said she might send me for a camera to make sure its nothing else thats triggering the fissure, told her i dont really want the camera or ANY surgery, scared to death of anything like that...but u can heal a fissure guys if u start taking mega amounts of fibre, keeping it clean and applying an ointment called GTN be careful tho it gives u a wicked headache for bowt half hour, good luck and if any one has any useful tips for me id appreciate it. thanks

Hi rachel, reading your post make my bum curl. Iv'e had this problem for 5 months now. i came down with a nasty flu back in June this year, which lasted for 6 weeks, off work an bed ridden.then this itchiness.. started comming on .. thought nothing of it at the time, a month passed i went to my doctor told him i had itchy bum. he gave me 2 worm tablet each for husband an i to take 1 then an other in 2 weeks time.. plus "Miconazole cream"(broad spectrum antifunal cream )plus Zeptop tablets 10mg for itch, rash or Allergy,I took all these, did not get any better, so i tried, wetting toilet tissue with warm water then very slowly dabbing to clean my bum area, then dabbing slowly a dry tissue.(to dry) I then go la in a recovery position an slowly apply Vaseline to the annal an messaging my whole but-tots ares as well, wearing a loose track pants. parjamers pant, for awhile then making a hot water bag an lay down in bed to recover an feel warm( whole body warm) I sometimes fall asleep after all this, this normally takes place when i come home from work, when my body starts to relax an this itchy takes over..went back to doctors for the 4th time just last week he then gave me.6 depository to fill with cream an insert into my Virgina at night for 6 night an go back to him next week to give him the results(Clomazol, vaginal cream treatment..) so far NO DIFFERENCE.. in condition...I had stopped smoking for 4 months during this time. only to gain 11kilos..not impressed.. so back to smoking.. slowly loosing the weight..what a mission in LIFE..but i will take your ADVISE.. MEGA AMOUNTS OF FIBRE AN WATER... NOW JUST TO LOOK UP "WHAT IS FIBRE" to make sure it the right type for me.well will find a way . god bless.

Just literally found out whats going on with me found a load in my stools. Few days before I noticed it was itching constantly. Loads of them an quiet big!! Very worried feel very uncomfortable after this

My son aged 8 continues to soil his under pants. He eats a healthy diet with lots of fluid, is an active boy, he is bright and is not under any stress, so we are stuck. What advice can you give? In the past he has experienced passing large stools, so I sometimes feel that it is all psychological. We do talk about it openly, and he is trying.... but I am baffled by it all, help.

My name is Cora, my back is shaped as a S. I get made fun of it at school for slouching and not sitting up straight. I have pains in my back and sometimes its hard to breathe. Scoliosis is really hard to deal with. I don't know if you live with it the rest of your life if you do not get the surgery though. If you have an answer please respond

Hi Anthony. There is no golden rule. Theoretically it should be easier when soft because the skin only has to stretch a little bit. However, when hard you can get more of a firm pull on it. So experiment in the bath or shower when soft and hard. Be patient and determined and eventually you'll be very happy. Take care.
