    Nits and Head Lice

These little critters, which live in the hair and leave behind their eggs, which are called nits, are very common in kids under 11, and they are very easily treated. Read more →

no nits do not change colour male nits are darker than female nits, if he still has nits when hes one then go and see the docter but for the time been use spechil nit hair pruducts keep it in his hair for 5mins well you are combing his hair with a nit combe and then rinse and keep doing that twice a week because i had nits and that helped me you can get the spechil nit shampoo and condithiner from your nearist cemist... thank you if you red this i hope you take my advise.!!!!!!!

Robi comb for lice it shocks them dead. But it only works on lice not nits, runs about $20 Walgreen s. You may have missed a nit or nits and it's all it takes. Cheaper way use olive oil, put it all over the hair , it clogs the lice pores use a shower cap for 4 hours it kills them. And comb them out with a metal comb Walgreen s $7. U don't have to use olive oil every time either just comb and the nits will come out. Nits hatch ever5-8 days, I would check every two days to make sure.

my daughters keep getting nits all the time ive been told that if i keep using the solutions the nits will get use to it how can i get rid of them and keep them away.

just keep combing using conditioner & combing with a fine tooth comb. Do family's hair. Over a few weeks, about 3 x per week til u notice less eggs & nits. If kids @ sch, contact teachers, tell them,so that other parents can be informed. As there is no point u getting rid if they go bck 2school & get again. Good Luck!

my son is 18mths old and has red/strawberry blond hair. I found black bits in his hair that looked like soil I guessed these were nits. Do nits change colour with hair as I've only seen white eggs on dark hair?

The white eggs are dead ones - empty egg cases. The live eggs, those that will hatch into lice are a dark brown colour and will be close to the scalp. In a long term infestation it is believed that the lice will develope a changed colour to help them camoflage into the hair, as the different generations of lice hatch. Generally they range from a fairly transparent light brown to a dark brown/black. I find them most easily spotted after they have just fed as their abdomens show up as a dark spot.

Hi Sam, White eggs are alive, brown coloured eggs are dead. The adult lice are dark.

Hi, I've found that the head lice treatment doesn't always work. What I suggest you do is shampoo, rinse and then condition the hair and leave in for 5 mins so the nits go sleepy, then in sections put the nit comb through, wiping the nit comb on tissue to see if there is any of the little buggers and I would do this every other day for at least a week. Nits lay their eggs and can take one, two or even three before they hatch and has your daughter had a few she probably caught them before the Christmas break. Hope this helps 😊

I am now 14 year old and am completely free of lice and nits, but when i was in primary school it was a completely different story. from i was about 7 till 10 i just couldnt get the nits away, and i always had sore heads. my mum put this lice spray on to kill the lice and i used tea tree shampoo and conditioner to keep the nits away, although my hair smelt lovely, nits thought otherwise. then my mum put i fine tooth nits and lice comb through my hair every morning and every night. when i went swimming i had to wear i swimming cap, because although nits cant jump, they can swim.

My daughter refused to go to school today because the kids bully anyone who has nits. Before she was embaressed to let me looknin her hair but now she is desparate to get the nits out. We have tried various lotions and free ones from the chemist but she just keeps getting the nits back again from school. Hopefully now we will be able to try some other methods like the vinegar thanks to this forum.

I have a solution that works like a charm....though i was dubious when i heard about it. my mother never used to treat our hair as kids and we had so many nits and lice that we got teased. As a parent i have tried so many different methods and this is the best by far for myself. i use pet flea treatment. just one drop in the middle of my head, ON the hair. the lice die and fall out and it works like a repellant. getting dead nits out still has to be done by hand. But i havent had nits for like 6 months.

Hi, do you mean a flea shampoo or some other flea treatment? I am so fed up with treating and re-treating my kids hair and not getting anywhere. I'd really like to give your idea a go but just want to be sure I'm using the right thing.

get one of the battery operated combs that zap the live bugs. If you find one, then you know you have lice. It will make a buzzing sound and when one gets zapped, it stays in the comb and the comb stops buzzing.

Nits hate strong smells...Like vinegar,Then leave it on till 40-45 minutes...Then wash it out because of the acid it kills the eggs to you just need to comb all of the nits out but make sure you got all of them Ellie

Don't worry, there is help out there! Don't waste money on silly shampoos...Hi, I had its for a few years and rumours developed in my secondary school. I now am sixteen and luckily nit free. I found that the only thing that really worked was this nit comb that you can get at pharmacies for about £9.99 usually sometimes cheaper on the internet. It's called the nitty gritty nit comb. I really hope this helps ! :) x

Hello philipa, My mum used to pull her own hair out when she could NOT get rid of my nits, my mum asked around like yourself how to get rid of these irritating creatures and found an old wifes tale that if you get an old pop bottle clean it out and fill a third ov the bottle with cleaning dettol and another third with vinigar and fill the rest of the bottle with warm water, shake well. Apply this to dry hair and leave on for a couple of hours then wash out as normal and comb the hair through and you should pull all dead nits out and also the eggs will dry up and come out too. The dettol and vinigar worked for me and i have never (touch wood) caught them again. when applying to the dry hair it can be smelly but will not harm and if it stings a little it will be touching the scalp were your children have been itching and have made cuts or scraches but again this will not harm be persistant with it even tho your children will moan just like i did but i cannot thank my mum enough for it..i hope this helps you x

We use the tea tree conditioner on our hair. You can get it from savers for about a pound. It won't get rid of nits, but we have used it after every hair wash for a year and not got nits.

Hi, I have the same problem with my daughters hair i am having to put the nit comb thought it before and after school to get and live nits out, i wash & put condinor thoguth her hair every other day and use the comb to get any nits & eggs out which keeps them at bay. I have tryed all the diffent lotions & creams on the market which cost a lot. But i feel that some parents are trying to keep they child free for nits where as other parents dont bother and its like you are fighting a losing battle as soon as they are clear they go back to school and get reinfected. I say bring back the NIT LADY i know it worked well when i was at school ALL kids where checked and not left to the parents to treat which meant that you did not get them as much

Ok you need to tell your parents, If you dont then your head will be crawling with nits/lice and then every1 will see them!Just say mum i think ive got nits!:( I told my mum and shes given me treatment that shes gonna do every day untill i get rid of them, all she does is puts special anti nit oil(kills them)Then gets a special nit comb wich gets the eggs out!

Here's the foolproof method of getting nits and lice for good. Get tea tree oil shampoo and rub it onto your dry scalp. Leave it for 10 or more minutes and then wash the hair. Comb out any lice and pick out the nits. Wait for hair to dry and then rub coconut oil all over scalp (saturate it) then put on a shower cap and leave on all day preferably (gotta leave it on for at least 8 consecutive hours. Then wash again with the tree tea oil shampoo. Do this regime every day for one week and you won't be picking any more nits! Also, this treatment repels them for good. Over the counter stuff does not work. good luck

i think everyone goes through this when our kids go to school. i'm a hairdresser and was horrified when my daughter came home with them. i tried all the solutions, nit comb with conditioner, etc. eventually i read a tip in a magazine and it actually works. put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on ur childs collar every morning. nits obviously dont like them. my daughter hasnt had any for over a year. ive told all my friends and there all doing it too. make sure they have no nits before trying this

Nits are hard to get rid of but not impossible. Firstly, don't forget to treat the hair comb & brushes. Anything that cannot be washed in hot water can be placed in the sun in a plastic bag for 7 days. They reckon that nits cannot survive for long without a host however I have my doubts about this as there is so much conflicting advice. Nits also build up a resistance to products, so if you have had them long term & using chemical solutions then change the brand occassionally. For conditioner treatment, coat the hair in it & put on a shower cap for 1/2 hour. Then comb out with a good quality steel nit comb. Repeat every few days & eventually this will break the cycle. Any missed eggs will hatch but you get them with the next treatment before they are old enough (about 3 weeks old) to lay eggs.

Hi phoebe , well I have a long hair and I keep having head lice , this year I had it 3 times ! I had tons of nits in my hair. U don't need expensive treatment to get rid of lice and nits, ill tell u what I do when ever I get lice I put vinger in my hair then I cover it with shower cap and I let it overnight then in the morning ill remove the shower cap and go stright to the shower to wash my hair with regural shampo , u won't believe the amount of bugs falling off my hair then I comb my hair while in the shower for 20 minutes then ill blow dry my hair . After that comes the nit picking step, since I have no one to pick through my hair , ill put a white sheet on the floor and sit on it combing my hair down removing all the nits out, repeat daily for 2 weeks and u will be lice free. And don't be embarressed ! Its very common having lice. And when ppl ask me I say yes I have lice . Nothing to be ashamed off.
