    Incontinence

Faecal incontinence means children involuntarily open their bowels and soil themselves, often without being aware it's happening, and this can occur several times a day. Read more →

Hi, Have you tried asking your doctor for a medicine called picosulfate (Dulcolax). If this doesn't work, demand to go to the hospital. I had been fighting for 2 yrs with my son who is 4 to get him there. He's been on Lactulose, Senna, Movicol, and Ducosate and each one hadn't worked on my son. They took him in on 4th Sept and he came out today. They gave him kleanprep. (Surgeons use this to clean the bowels before surgery). 2 days later his bowels certainly opened. All the poo was going up under his ribs. He is now a very happy child. He is now taking Movicol again and Picosulfate to keep his bowels moving. Good luck.

My son is 9 1/2 and was diagnosed with a compacted bowel April 10. After trying movicol and colonic his bowels are finally emptying but to the extreme that he is constantly soiling through out the day and wears a nappy. Like others that have replied to your intial post I am completely stumped. I am torn between it being a physical or an emotional problem. No one seems to have any answers and I am at my wits end trying to get my son to control his bowels. Being in Darwin Australia I have found the GP's paediatrians just say it will get better but when and how. The strain is huge on my family. As per other requests is there anyone or anything that can help us as parents to get through this and more importantly the children to understand what is happening to them and why????? Desperately seeking help.

I normally have lumps around the opening to my vagina but they have disapeared and the hole seems more open and airy and feels a bit uncomfortable

Inbetween my years of being 3-6 I've had 3 eye operations, 2 failed and only the last worked. It was because one eye lid was slightly more closed and when i slept it stayed open, called a lazy eye.But now at the age of 14 I'm finding it's starting to go back to how it originally was again, and it's starting to become more noticable really quickly. Advise please?

My daughter frequently has threadworms and tonight it looked as if the worm was coming out of an open sore just outside her anus instead of the anus itself. Is it possible that the worms have caused a sore???

my daughter was unfortunately exactly the same and after years of researching - the doctors finally found out that it was indeed ADHD but not to worry, there are many medications available. :)

Hi My daughter had a cornflake sized one by her inner eye and three smaller ones just under the bottom lip plus five or six on her hands when she was 2 - 3yrs - the hands and chin ones were treated with acid applied twice week for 6 wks but the one by her eye couldn't be touched. They lasted about 8 months but she is free from ALL now. Apparently as a babe her immune was low which made her open to the virus. I am sure your son's will dissapear suddently. :)

Hi, I am sorry all these have comments have made you feel like that, I wrote one of the earlier comments on here about my daughter's treatment. She was born with bilateral cdh and has had lots of treatment to date. We still don't know if her right hip is ok yet, HOWEVER she had an open reduction on her left hip last march and to date it has been fine since - hope that reassures you a little bit!

Go to your doctor and ask for Picosulfate as you desperately need it. If they refuse then demand to go to the hospital as you want her tested to see if she is bunged up if she is then its kleanprep then will open her bowels up. My son is 4 yrs old and has been constipated for 2 yrs and his poo was going right under his ribs. Klean prep has certainly done the job after 2 days working.

My 7 year old Son also has episodes of extremely painful stomach pains however the episodes are few and far between but when they do occur it can last for a full week or 2 and only really occurs at night (every night). He can be sometimes doubled over crying in pain, however he never needs to open his bowels and his function is pretty normal during these episodes. Last time this happened we took him to A&E twice and the doctors on call it was that bad. They couldn't diagnose anything and never proceeded to investigate.

My daughter was diagnosed with HDD at 10 months, she had an open reduction in March 2010 and was put in hip spica for 12 weeks. This was removed in June. Sorry about this bit but these ops can be unsuccessful which happened to Maia. She now faces another open reduction with femoral osteotomy with 2 weeks preoperative traction. This will happen in September when she is 21 months. We feel like others on this site that we have not had the full information or any support from the medical people. It can be a very emotional and distressing period. We have been going through this last 10 months, so have every sympathy with everyone going through this. The very best of luck to you all who are going through this.

my daughter is now almost 6 yrs and has suffered from constipation almost since birth,it has become a nightmare as she is now terrified of the toilet and all it involves she refuses to empty her bowels in the toilet and will only do so in a pullup this is effecting her socially, has anyone any advice please

hi kelly we had big probs with our boy who is now 6 1/2.doctors had no answers,we ended up seeing a certified nutritionist/live cell microscopist he was amazing and our boy is now healthy and happy, it has changed our lives. hope this helps.

My son has had trouble with his bowels too since he was born he's had loads of tests done but they come back fine all the time. He is now 15 ready to do his gcse exams and still poos himself which he tries his best not too. He gets really badly constipated for a couple of week then gets diarrhoea for about 4 days. He gets very upset with it and find it really hard to make friends as he is always worries that his peers will make fun of him because he sometimes smells. I have tried changing his diet but nothing seems to help and all the doctor seems to say is keep on taking the medicine and try and find the right dosage which is no help. He is on lactose solution. I would really like some help xx

I have the exact same thing as you. You could try home remedies, but if it wasn't fixed right away you probably need surgery. Hope this helps.

Much would depend on your age. How old are you?

Hi did you apply the sap daily and did you cover them with tape or just leave them open to the air. My granddaughter has many on her hands and ankle so would be giving it a go.

Here's my story so far, I hope it brings some comfort and guidance to other parents in a similar situation, or may be of some help to those of a medical profession. My son is 5 years old and starting his second year at school. He has suffered with severe constipation since he was just a few months old. My son drank powdered milk from 6 weeks old, was weaned at 5 months; he was not a picky eater, he was given a lot of convenience food (baby jars), but did also have home cooking. Docs prescribed Lactulose, Senna (then a combination of both), and then Docusate but they all did nothing (Docs told me to expect explosions within 15 mins, days later my son was still crouched under the dining table with a look of desperation on his face). The Docs said each of these laxatives carry out different functions (i.e. one will soften the bowels, one will create motion within the bowels etc). We also tried suppositories which seemed to work at first but his poo was so big and hard it was just too painful for him. He needed something to soften the bowels and make them move which is what the prescribed combination of laxatives should have done for him but they just didn't work. I now think the pyscological aspect had kicked in and his brain over powered his body, preventing him from pooing. After 2 years of seeing our son in terrible pain (and passing stools of sizes that I never imagined possible) he was eventually referred to Paeds and given Movicol. God Bless Movicol, it was the first medicine that actually worked for him as it carries out multiple functions (i.e. it softens the stools and gets the bowels moving). It was perfect for him. During the last 3 years things have definitely improved overall, but when things seem to be getting better it all quickly gets worse again. Docs insist that my son needs to be able to go to the toilet and poo comfortably before there will be any pyscological improvement so are only treating this aspect, and I agree with this, however he's also got to pyscologically want to go to the toilet before he will go so it can seem a viscous circle at times and I think parents should be offered more pyscological help much earlier on. The paeds want to discharge my son in November leaving him to continue his Movicol treatment but so far have not given him any psyc treatment, which I know is exactly what he needs right now. When things get worse for my son, I try to take a step outside of my 'bubble' and try a different way to approach him about the whole toilet thing. It's amazing how quickly things can improve when his brain is in agreement with me. Some ideas that have helped me are: incentive schemes, magazine/newspaper to read on the loo (he likes to pretend to be daddy), blowing up a balloon when on the loo(or pretending to) as this gets the bowels moving, talking about the human body and how it works and what feelings we get and what they can mean. My son has started talking back to me about what things mean to him. When he's sat under the table or in a corner with 'that look upon his face' his 'brain' is telling him to stop the poo from coming out. Then when the feelings stop he thinks everything's ok and he doesn't need to go to the loo anymore. I responded by letting him know that he does not have to do what his brain tells him, his brain just gives him signals/feelings that something is happening but that he then gets to choose what to do which can be something completely different to what he thinks. I then asked him to try sitting on the toilet the next time his brain was giving him 'the signals' - this worked a treat and he was over the moon. He then agreed to sit on the loo after breakfast and after dinner and practise blowing his balloons for 5 mins each time, and for a couple of days now he has poo'd perfectly twice a day and the soiling has virtually stopped. With regards to how much Movicol he is taking, when he gets really constipated I take him up to 4 sachets a day which he takes in 1 drink of squash (I have tried splitting these into 2 drinks but it works better for his bowels as 1), this forces his bowels empty and then I reduce him down to 3 sachets (I used to reduce by a teaspoon at a time, but now it's either half sachet or whole sachets), and then 2 sachets, but so far when we reach 2 sachets we get sausage shaped poos but they're so huge (and very sticky) and then we get soiling, so I'm sticking at 3 sachets right now and focusing on my son's mind in the hope that he keeps up the enthusiasm that he's now showing. Not sure what the future holds for us, but I'm keeping optimistic and giving my son the patience and time that he needs, and I remain hopeful that things keep moving in the right direction but accept that the road may still be rocky. Sorry my comments are so long; I know how much it means when you realise others are going through the same thing so I wanted to share my experience.

this sounds just like my 6 year old he is currently on lactulose and has passed today for the first time in a week. he tends to give me the look as if he needs to go then it passes and i get him to try sitting on the loo but this upsets him. might try the balloon thing and the magazine thing might like that. ive had this for four years now so thanks for the advice x

Hi, my daughter age 6 1/2 has suffered with mild constipation for a while and the last few months has been on Lactulose. Its not working as well as it could so we changed to Movocol; been using it for 2 days and today she emptied her bowels easily with large soft stools but one had a spot of bright blood on the end. Could it be due to the Movocol or something serious? Shes not unwell and not sore either. Any suggestions as to what may have caused tbe blood would be greatly received.

i just stoped giving her movicol- she is on flaks seeds. my previous post is one above yours- so belive me we had huge problem with our child. i spoke to my family ( im foregin) and told me about old polish recepee. told me to giving my 2-year old flax seeds. i found them in england (£5) and they really helped her. she still struggle but she doesnt scream from pain. poop is soft, and she does it everyday- couple of weeks ago i rushed to hospital as she didnt opened her bowels for 7 days- her button belli came out! i was so scared. anyway Darling i would just recomend flax seeds, fennol tea ( only in tesco) and lots of apples. you may just give to your child friut pots - apple and pear together. goodluck- let me know how you doing...

I have just been to GP after suffering for 2 whole months, since I the itchiness resulted in small amounts of blood in my stool. The GP has requested for stool sample and a blood sample and told Me to apply vasaline before opening my bowels. However my wife Says she can see a cut above my anus and infected skin, but he told me he could see nothing. What can I do? I am still itchy and unhappy As I still have to work, and it gets uncomfortable.

Hi gillian, my son is also 13 and he's always wet the bed during the night. However, it's been nearly two months since he last wet himself. Although it's a distressing situation both for child and parents my advice is be patient, it won't last forever.

i am 15, my bust size is a 'c' every other girl that is open with there size say they are 'd/dd'. is this a bad thing? should i be worried.

no this is no problem everyone's breasts grown at different stages depending on puberty but if your that worried talk to you adults or go to the doctors they have seen everything

Also, something to consider is that 70% of women are said to be wearing the wrong bra size. When I was 16 I was wearing 36B even though I was really skinny. I then went to a proper lingerie shop to be measured and found out that I was a 32DD. I know women of all ages that are as small as an A cup and as those who are as big as a K cup. We are all different no matter how old we are. I would definitely recommend getting measured properly though. Shops such as Debenhams, house of fraser, or small boutiques are usually the best.
