    Tight foreskin

The medical name for a tight foreskin is phimosis, and it means that the foreskin – the flesh at the tip of the penis – cannot be pulled be back to reveal the head of the penis (the glans). Read more →

After unprotected sex with my girlfriend the head of my penis/foreskin gets red and sore and sometimes swells. We have both recently taken thrush tablets so I assumed it wasnt bacterial infecfion. If we have sex with a condom I am fine , but without it always gets sore like this. Can anyone suggest what this could be or if I should seek further medical help? Thanks!

No idea...does it look red or sore? If so, you could put vaseline or a baby moisturiser on him. He's probably going through "the willy stage". The skin on the penis is the same as the skin everywhere else. Keep a close eye on it for a few weeks. I would divert his mind from it. Make sure he wears good fitting briefs to stop any rubbing and dries the area properly after washing.

My son is 10 and his foreskin can be pulled back but only to the end of the "Bell End" I've taken him to see our local GP because the foreskin is attached to the bottom of his bell end (sorry for the vulgar phrase) and he complains that it is very sore the doc treated him for thrush and he applied the cream for 10 days but he still complains his penis his sore I've give him salt baths and tried the cream again but it has had n effect please help.

Hey I get tightness 50% of the time. I'm 15 so erections are frequent and happen in the most ridiculous places and when i do get and erection the foreskin tries to pull itself back but gets stuck half way and causes a bit of pain. I can't push it up back over the head of the penis so to reduce the pain I have to pull the foreskin all the way back over the penis which gives me a big bit of pain then just a little but the point is its still there. what makes this worse it the head of the penis starts rubbing against my briefs making either my penis sore and or making my erection last even longer giving pain. when my penis goes soft after pulling the foreskin back (as i have no idea how long my erection will last or when I'm going to get another) the skin stays back and because it is soft the penis head rubs against my briefs even more. As I still go to school I can't always push and pull the foreskin discreetly. please give me some advice that can sort this problem as I don't want to get circumcised many thanks

Hi Kai. Don't worry, you can sort this out without circumcision. Some foreskins, like yours automatically pull back on erection. What should happen is that when you go soft, the foreskin goes back forward. Yours doesn't because it is still a little bit tight. Persevere with more stretching exercises in the bath or shower and this will loosen it up, reducing the pain, subsequent rubbing and soreness. Also, when you do get an erection don't pull it back over the bell end to relieve it because it will stay there. Leave the foreskin where it stops naturally, grit your teeth and bear the pain for a bit. The erection should go down more quickly, allowing your foreskin to move forward by itself. Hope this helps...let us know how you get on.

My son is 4 yrs old and has been trying to wee a lot. dip tests are negative, his temperature is fine. he was on anti b's for 3 days but they took him off as he did not show any pain. he has a high pain threshold and is terrified of doctors but I noticed a sore on the tip of his penis right by the hole. What could it be and what can I do?? Its driving us both nuts!! Will be going back to gp and pushing it but would appreciate some advice. Have read advice given. He is constantly playing with his penis....I assumed it was a man thing and just ignored it. Discouraging it just drew attention to it. His foreskin is not tight. I do not wash it.

Hi Hazel. There are many much older boys who still have tight foreskins. They sort it out eventually and have no problems. I wouldn't put him under pressure. Keep the area clean and do anything to avoid it getting inflamed. He is still very young. Hope this helps.

follow the full course of treatment, and avoid alcohol (it lessens the effect of the drugs). I could suggest briefs as opposed to boxers (speedo type) there cheap at the supermarket and will offer a bit of morale support whilst things heal up.

Sounds like you have an infection - especially when you say it burns to urinate. Talk to your GP and describe your symptoms. Your GP may not even need to take a look if you can describe the symptoms clearly, and can then give you the right medication to sort it out quickly and easily.

My son is 11 and has just started to complain about a sore penis and so i asked if he minded showing me to which he agreed. On inspection he tried to pull the skin back but it will only come about half way back and the head of his penis looks really sore. Should i take him to see them gp and is it anything to be worried about?

Hi Sharon. The end of a penis with the foreskin stretched back can look a little reddish especially around the pee hole. It's good that he can pull back his foreskin a little. I would recommend that he perseveres with this stretching and keeps the end of his penis very clean. Pull back and wash with warm water only. Dry off properly. Also get him to wear good fitting underwear with no seams in the front pouch to avoid any rubbing. Things should improve soon. Hope this helps.

my 5yr old son has been suffering for months with a really sore penis right on the tip where the urine comes out. it is blood red and hes had creams and antibiotics from the doctor and also been told he will grow out of it. but he is starting full time school this month i feel so sorry for him as this problem causes him to wet himself aswell as being very sore. can someone please help.

Hi Ann. The first person to pull back a boys foreskin is the boy himself and not you! As he gets older the foreskin will detach from the penis head. Ballooning when he urinates is an indication that it has started to detach and he may accidentally pull it back soon after this. At bath times, just make sure the area is cleaned. One day he will manage to pull it back and reassure him that it's quite normal. In the meantime, don't worry if he has no problems down there. Hope this helps.

Hey, 18 year old male here. I've never pulled my foreskin over the head of penis as it's hard to do. I've noticed that the opening to my penis, (uretha I think?) is kinda red, but not sore when I pee or do anything else. I'm quite shy and I wouldn't talk to my parents about this. Should I try the exercises and see if it makes a difference or just go straight to a doctor? Whenever I think about this it makes me feel sick. Thanks

Hi Lewis. I understand and you are not alone so don't worry or feel sick. No need to involve parents or doctors. Try this first - Take a warm bath as this will soften your foreskin. Don't use soap. Hold the base of your penis shaft with your thumb on top and fingers of one hand underneath. Use the other to grasp the bit close to the tip of your penis and gently try and pull back towards your body. You should uncover the end and see the opening to your penis. Be brave and pull a little bit further. Wash off any gunge that you see - this is called smegma. Then cover you penis with the foreskin again. You can try this as many times as you like when soft or hard, whichever seems more successful. Repeat the exercises as often as you can. As you get more confident, you will find that you will loosen up and stretch your foreskin over the next few months. Persevere and I'm confident very soon you'll be a happy young man. Take care and let us know how you get on as your experience will help others.

Don't be scared Matt. Your penis head will be sensitive and moving your foreskin back and forward can be a little painful at first but it will get easier over time. Be gentle with it and wash it in warm baths. It's not unusual for a foreskin to stay back when the penis is erect. When you go soft again, it maybe a bit fiddly but easier to pull skin forward again. Try to do this otherwise it may get red and sore. When you are ready for sex - your penis will work fine OK. Chill out dude

When I have an erection and my tip is pulled back the seam on my penis pulls the head down and it is very sore what should I do?

This may need surgical correction if it causes discomfort. If not and it just bends things a bit... No real worries!

Don't worry, your bits sound quite normal to me and you are just analysing how it all works. It can sometimes take a little effort to pull your foreskin forward perfectly after it has been pulled back. Just experiment a little and you'll work out how to do it easily. Try not to leave your foreskin stuck behind the penis head as it may get red, sore and itchy. Remember that generally your foreskin is supposed to cover your penis head. Take care dude you'll be OK.

Hi, I'm 16 my penis is sore when I pull the foreskin over the tip, and it won't go any further than the glans. I'm worried that it will affect my sex life as it worries me that it will hurt when having sex. What can I do?

Hey Tom. Don't worry. All you have to do is keep stretching it. Do it when you take a bath or shower at first as the water softens the skin and makes it easier. It is important to get your foreskin to move properly so persevere. It can hurt a little bit but take things slowly and you'll be OK

Hi T. All boys get erections even before they are born. It is very normal so don't worry at all. Also it is not unusual for a 5 year old foreskin to be tight. The sore red tip could be an infection but is more likely to be a irritation from soap products. Use mild simple soaps or baby stuff to bath him and it may improve. Dry him off properly and use clean underwear every day (simple briefs. Try this and get back to us if you need to. Take care.

I am 14 nearly 15 and I have really tight foreskin, when I try to pull my foreskin back I can just about see the tip of the head, but it is sore just doing that, also when I masturbate it is sore and I only sometimes have a tiny bit of cum, but I am worried because when I try and clean my penis I struggle to pull the foreskin back to clean the head. What should I do?

Hi Jack! The first thing is not to worry as you are not alone. Take regular warm baths as this softens the foreskin. Try gently pulling it back when your penis is soft and wash the tip without soap. Always pull it forward again. Over time, it should start to move easier. Be patient. A tiny bit of cum could be due to you masturbating too frequently or you don't have the right techniques. It's not really a problem so don't worry.

Hi im 16 Can you tell me why my penis is sore and red, its also quite painful when I urinate I started to get these pains just a couple of days ago after I masturbated is this a sign that im doing it too often or something else? please reply thank you.

Don't leave things to chance, if its not better see a doctor. Don't answer the question but were any soaps, lubricants, etc used? depending on what they are can cause pianful irritation I've found! Failing that cut down for a while.

It is important that he is not forcing his foreskin back. The soreness could be an irritation caused by soap products used when bathing. Make sure he washes the area with warm water only. When the foreskin is pulled forward again properly, then he can use soap. He must dry himself properly. Change underwear every day and if possible wear a simple brief. After a week or so the redness should get less. If not then he may have an infection and a visit to the doctor should be considered. I hope things go OK.

Hi Chris. Don't worry too much as long as your penis is not red, sore or itchy. Make sure you wash it regularly and don't fiddle with it too much especially if your hands are dirty.

I'm 13, I've been walking on my tiptoes all my life! Everyone always asks me why but its just the way I've always walked! I do irish dancing and for light dances, you have to be always on your toes, so it makes things worse. I always have a sore back, everyday, also sore legs. Its emotional for me because I love sports and a lot of the time I'm too sore to do them! I'm not sure if my back and leg pain are from the way I walk tho, but its the most likely thing!

HI there Lisa. Good to read your story since my daughter, at 12 (year 8) is also tiptoeing - and having to do exercises for it now - and her legs are sore at school everyday. She's been in tears recently after school because her legs hurt her so much and so I wonder how you are coping emotionally (since my daughter is not and it's causing us a lot of worry). She loves sports too and has had to give up swimming club because her legs hurt too much. Up and down stairs at school also hurts a lot. She's been diagnosed also with femoral anteversion (intoeing) - and this probably doesn't help! I'm sorry you've got back pain too. I hope you can get sorted out.

Yeah I had to go to the doctors and see specailists for my Toe walking and they said that it was normal, and they also made me do exercises.

first I would make sure when she is hoveing a poo you sask her if her bum is sore sand if it is and its very sore you should really go and see the dov=ctor

I am 14 and my penis is quiet a normal size, but all the skin does not go below the head of the penis when it it erect, does this mean my penis is still growning? By the way i ent in no pain when i masturbate or anything. I am just curious if my penis is still growing?

Yap. It is still growing. But dont believe that when it reaches full growth the head will be always out. If u are un-circunsized the skin will always hide the head, some more than others, only when its erect it maybe uncover the head, not necessarly all of it.

Hi, I'm 13 and I can pull my foreskin just so I can barely see the tip. Trying to pull it back causes a very bad stinging sensation and the penis often gets very sore if I keep trying to do this. I do not want to see a doctor or G.P or even tell my parents as I'm very afraid to. I'm embarrassed as I guess most boys at my age can do this and I fear I'm not normal, what's wrong with me?

Hey Bob...there's nothing wrong with you. Tell your parents if you want - there's nothing to be ashamed of. Just keep gently pulling it back every time you take a bath. Don't put soap in the water. It will start to move a little bit more each time and eventually will go all the way. It can be a bit painful and stingy but be patient and in 6 months time you will see a big difference. Many boys have the same issues and usually this method sorts it out. Take care - you know where we are.
