  • Anal Fissures

An anal fissure is a rip, tear or ulcer in the lining of the anal canal (which is situated just inside the opening of the anus). It is very common and can occur at any age; in both adults and children. Read more →

Hiya. I totally sympathize with you. My son Kaelan, was seen by our GP numerous times and then referred but we were given no answers in terms of diagnoses. All I was being told was that it was probably worms. Although after worming him twice, with no effect, we knew it had to be something else. It wasn't until we met Anouk that we finally got some answers. She knew what the problem was straight away...an anal fisure. My advise to you is to keep on at your GP and insist you be referred to investigate the possibility of a fisure. After our meeting with Anouk, Kaelan has been prescribed Xyloproct (a cream) to heal the tear and Movicol(a powder for oral solution) to keep his stools soft to avoid a reoccurence of anymore tearing. We were quite shocked to hear Kaelan had been suffering with constipation. As a family we enjoy a high fibre diet, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. According to Miss Van der Avoirt some children's digestive systems are slower than others. It's just one of those things. Kaelan is getting on really well now. His had one little tear since but no way as bad as it was before. He just has to keep up the treatment and we have to make sure he drinks plenty of water, as this can also be a cause of constipation. I hope this has been of some help to you. Good luck with getting your son treated. Regards, Esther x

I am 14 and i have a small tear on my anul canal and sometimes its there and sometimes its not. I dont get constepated that much and not lately so i dont understand why its there.

You are much too young to be worrying about sex. Remeber it is illegal until you are 16. There is no right time to start having sex with someone, just when it feels right. Though you must be able to talk about it. If you can't talk to your boyfriend then don't have sex until you feel comfortable doing so-it's very important that you communicate, especially if it is your first time. If you decide you are ready remember yo take precautions. Refuse to have sex without a condom. If you don't you could end up with an infection or pregnant. They tear quite easily and are only about 80% effective. Remember there are loads of different types of contraception but you will need to go to your GP for them. Just take care okay? It is your body so treat it with respect and don't do anything you don't want to do. If your boyfriends says he will leave you if you don't do something - get rid of him. Hope this helps!

hi, i am reading all these comments and cant believe that there are so many people out there with the same sort of issues as my 5 year old son, i repeatedly took my son to the doctors as he couldnt poo sometimes for up to 2 weeks, and when he did go it was that painful for him he screamed the house down, he also managed to tear his bottom over and over as he was managing to pass massive poo's, it took me 3 years to get him refered to the hospital and they have medicated him with movical, this sorts his issues out on a temporay basis, but within a month or so then the problem returns, they seem to think that he will grow out of this but i dont think so, he doesnt gain weight, my 18 month old daughter is heavier than him, he looks malnourished and he hardley eats anything, when he has to go back on the movicol i have to give him a day off school as he cant control his bowel when it takes effect, im wondering whether i should seek a second opinion

Hi Esther, I hope you don't mind me personally responding to you but I have had an anal fissure for over a year now and I am so unhappy, as you can imagine. I have been to the Dr's numerous times but they are generally very unsympathetic. I have tried everything from changing my diet, excercising, drinking lots of water, ointments and other natural remedies. My tear is very large now, it seems to me like it is not going to heal but after seeing this and hearing Kaelan's story, I feel like there is hope. What I wanted to ask, is when Kaelan has his minor operation, was it simply as Miss Van der Avoirt described in the video clip? That they literally stretched his anus? I am worried about surgical procedures as I have read that they make a small tear to encourage healing? The thought of having another tear really makes me anxious and I was wondering if Kaelan was given this procedure? I hope you can give me some advice and I thank you so much for being on the programme and giving people like me hope that one day things will be better x

Hi Kate. So sorry to hear you are suffering. If Kaelan is anything to go by I really feel for you. Miss Van der Avoirt is right in that the procedure is that simple (for Kaelan anyway). It took her a couple of minutes and all she did was simply stretch his anus with her fingers (I saw the full footage). If I were you, next time you visit your doctor I would insist you be refered. Knowing what I know now I would research specialist consultants that practice in your area I would then use your right of patient choice and tell your doctor the consultants name. From my past experience regarding Kaelan's problem, you have to tell your doctor what you want. The doctors at my local practice are great it was the failings of the consultant at my local hospital that let Kaelan down. That's why I urge you to find a specialist yourself. I hope this will be of some help to you. Esther

Hi my son is 5 and he has a small tear at the top of his bottom. He has been to the dictors twice and they have given cream, but we have found leaving it a couple of days with no moisture helps. The only thin is he has had this for a few months now, his problem is he doesn't drink enough fluids and we try so hard with him to drink plenty. So we feel like we are going round in circles. We find when he does drink plenty he has no blood so it seems like the tear is healing, then he doesn't drink enough and it starts to bleed a little grrrrr very frustrated

My children go through this dame problem. I have found fiber supplement is very helpful. My girls are 9 and 12 but I give them less than recommended dose of benefiber twice daily instead of three times and it has helped tremendously.

I see that constipation is a big problem here. I had lots of constipation as a kid, and endless prescriptions of lactulose, I even resisted going for about 10 days until it was unbearable and I went for a suppository. Now that suppository was AMAZING! It changed what would have been excruciating pain into a normal, easy to pass stool, I couldn't BELIEVE it!You have to have a prescription for it though. One of my remedy's for a tear down there was sudocream, a bathroom cabinet must! I would put a generous amount on at night around the bottom hole, and depending on the severity of the tear, it would shave more or less healed in 1-3 night-time application.I still get it every now and again, but the most important thing to do to prevent this would be TO STAY HYDRATED WITH WATER!!!!!!!! it helps so much, so if you do anything to combat constipation, DRINK!!!!!

hi since primary school i have suffered with nits and now im 14. Im really getting annoyed with them and after pushing my mum to try and look for somthing she brought something home its called headrin it so good and works a tear try this.:)

Hi Kyle. Difficult to make an assessment but is highly unlikely that it will tear off. If it is red and sore you may have an infection. Keep the area clean. If you are really worried just go to your doctor and get it checked out. Hope this helps...let us know how you get on.

Hi my names Kyle and I'm 15, since the last few days my foreskin is starting to hurt when is pulled back, this has never happened to me before, and it feels like my foreskin is gonna tear of. Could you please help?

Im 15 and I cant pull my foreskin back what so ever. It really puts my confidence down and im scared that when I have sex it will hurt and almost tear my foreskin, even with protection. Ive tried stretching exercises in the bath and none of them seem to work. I want to go to the doctor but im embarrassed to tell my mom... Would circumcision be the best option?

Hi Jordan. You'd be amazed what teen boys tell their Moms so join the club! Mom's are generally the best persons in the world to share your worries with. There is essentially nothing wrong with circumcision at your age but it is a permanent, irreversible solution. What I would do is make an appointment with your doctor. If they ask on the phone what it's about just say it's not urgent but you'd rather discuss it with the doctor. He or she is likely to give you some steroid cream, which can be very effective in loosening up your foreskin. I doubt if they'll even want to look at your bits so don't be embarrassed. In the meantime, take care and avoid sex until you are happy that your penis and mind are ready. Let us know how you get on.

She is uncomfortable 2 hours before she needs to go and screams on the toilet before during and after. She wakes up during the night and cries for hours complaining her bum hurts. Around the anus about 1 cm around it looks red raw. She is so uncomfortable a lot of the time. What can I do? Doc has given daktakort for the redness but is doing nothing and she is on marvicol sachets. It's been 6 weeks. Please help

You must tell your dad or mum about this, i had it when i was 12 very painful erections etc, took me a while to tell dad. In the end. I was circumcised the operation took about 15 minutes didnt hurt abit because i was injected to numb the area, the pain of the healing wasn`t as bad i was expecting infact if i had to choose which pain was more painful it was the erections whilst having a tight foreskin brought a tear to my eye everytime. I am now very happy with the result.

I had dis problem for almost one year, used to bleed fresh while passing stool,I told my docter sis who told me I got anal tear cause of once being constipated and now its like a vicious cycle causing spasm of anal wall to shrink while passing stool instead of relaxing and inturn cause bleeding, and treatment is only that doctor will put both thumbs inside n stretch for a minute to release the spasm and naturally it is a painful procedure so done under GA,,I went for it n since then no bleeding.

Ok first question, did your Boyf use a condom? Aside from all the usual std and pregnancy stuff people will say there is this answer... Apparently a lot of men actually carry thrush (candida) in the folds of skin around thier penis, so it could be that by breaking the skin in your anus he's given you thrush which if you go to your gp or chemist and get some thrush cream you can get it cleared up in a jiffy. You'd do well though to get your Boyf to use the cream too, otherwise with or without using a condom you can just pass the thrush back and forth to each other. (Guys don't like the idea that they have thrush on thier willys so just say no sex till you use the cream) However I'd suggest that whilst you both get treated you don't have sex or any form of play with your nether regions for a week. I know this, not because I'm a gp but because it happened to me in my early 20's. if the symptoms persist please do go see your gp. Please please please have safe sex and especially if you have any accident like accidental anal sex, if you tear and bleed you could expose yourself to all sorts of nastiness and the last thing you want at a young age is a std or worse!! I hope this helps
