Lauren has been suffering from alopecia since the age of two, and it’s steadily getting worse – since starting secondary school Lauren has lost 70% of her hair and is forced to wear a wig. Alopecia is an auto-immune disease, the body doesn’t think the hair belongs to it, so it rejects it. Lauren has Alopecia Areata, which affects children and young adults. Why is unknown, but possible causes are viruses, inoculations, shock or extreme stress. As the longer the problem has persisted, the harder it is to find a cure, Dr Pixie suggests that Lauren has a permanent wig fitted. Lauren visits Lucas Sojka, a hair loss specialist. His team attaches a mesh, called a weft, to Lauren’s existing hair, and secures it to the bald patches with surgical tape. Panels of real hair are then sewn on to the weft to form a seamless head of hair. The transformation is drastic, Lauren’s mum describes her as a different person.

Hi my daughter is 3 years old and she has alopecia since the age of 2, it started of in patches and she finally lost it all. we have tried many steriod creams and even herbal things. although she has has 3 blood test only the 3rd one has come back that her TSH levels are high. Could this be the reason why she has lost her hair?

I have had alopecia for around 3 years now and it just just keeps coming and going, have have been self-conscious about it and always wear pretty bandana's. I have just turned 13 and I don't know if it is just me but when I used a certain shampoo in the shower it gave me a painful, burning sensation.

Hi everyone...my story...in march of 2011 I had my appendix removed well in July I started to notice a bald spot in my beard ,then my scalp started to shed as well ,by September I finally went to the dermatologist who said it was from the general anesthesia...from sept. 15th to the beginning of October my hair was falling out so bad I couldn't deal with it anymore and had my neighbor shave it bald...I since went to a hair and nail specialist...who diagnosed me with alopecia areata...I also want to say my eye brows have thinned out and I am losing my pubic hair as well...my arm,arm pit, chest and leg ahirnarenstill there and not seemingly being affected...my Dr. Is putting me on methotrexate and predizone..I am praying to god this works...I have always had the THICKEST head of hair and everyday I look in the mirror literally cry...by the way I am a 38 yrold male...I just really wanna say it just totally amazes me how now one will listen what I have to say...our health care system BLOWS...I also have red lunula...which is a severe case of alopecia...Has anyone ever heard of this before or someone who hashed surgery and is dealing with this...Cause there isn't a doubt in my mind the surgery caused my immune system to go haywire...Anyone think ill recover? Sorry to be all over the place here but,WHERE do I begin...thanks for listening...please email me bk!!!!!! I need some input

I was disappointed when I heard him say the worry about hairloss makes it fall out even more...this is completely false. This places the blame for their hairloss on the person experiencing it! There is so much misinformation concerning alopecia that needs to be corrected. I have had alopecia universalis for over 20 years. It has regrown, fallen out again, regrown partially, you name it it has done its own thing whether I worried or not. We are not responsible for our hairloss, it is an auto-immune disease which means the body rejects our own hair. It is out of our control and there is no treatment that works for everyone.

As i have gotten older the baldness has got worse.i have blonde and dark hair and the blonde parts do not grow, it is preventing me from living my life to the full.I do not like to leave the house as people stare and it makes me feel very self concious. I would like to know if the weft is availible on the NHS as i am unemployed and cant afford to go private!

found the five minute video quiet amazing, however am a bit concerned if something goes wrong how does it come off!!recently purchased my 14 year old daughter a good quality lace front custom made wig bit fidly to start with but she has adapted to it very well, can simply tape it for every day use or glue it for things like swimming or excesive sport, she is a state basketballer with a very heavy training schedule so was a bit concerned to start with weather it would stay on or not, it Does!!!!she is xtremely happy with it ,it looks and feels real,so after stressing and chasing cures for two years we are going to forget about it for a while, whatever hapens hapens.
